Why we chose Memphis

Our Commitment to Memphis

We chose Memphis because it represents everything the future of American technology should be: grounded, ambitious, and ready to lead. From its central location to its skilled workforce and resilient spirit, Memphis offers the ideal home for our most important project yet.

We're not just building here - we're investing here. That means:

Creating hundreds of permanent jobs in the greater Memphis community and across Tennessee

Partnering with local contractors and businesses

Prioritizing long-term economic and educational partnerships

Building with - not just in - Memphis

At xAI, we are committed to being a good neighbor to all Memphians and a responsible partner in the community to create opportunities, reinvigorate the city’s industrial park and cement Memphis’ status as the Digital Delta, the nation's leading AI technology hub. The foundational pillars that support this vision and partnership are our efforts around building sustainability and community.

Utilizing existing infrastructure in the former Electrolux facility, already zoned for our use.

Investing with no cost to Memphis utility providers.

35 million to build a 150MW substation to support MLGW, and xAI is committed to spending another $20 million to build a second substation. These substations will come online at no cost to MLGW and will help provide stability to the region's electrical grid.

We’re building redundancies to maintain the stability of Memphis’ electric grid.

We’re embracing sustainable energy storage systems, spending hundreds of millions of dollars on installing over 240 batteries that will allow our Electrolux facility to come completely offline during emergency situations or times of peak demand.

We’re partnering with MLGW and TVA to explore ways we can help stabilize and potentially even provide energy to the local electric grid.

xAI is working to bolster and protect the Memphis Sand Aquifer for the long term – at no cost to the city.

We are investing well north of $80 million to build a state-of-the-art water recycling plant in the next two years, protecting approximately 4.745 billion gallons of the Memphis Aquifer each year, and eliminating the need for our facility to draw from the Memphis Aquifer for industrial use.

In addition to serving our facility, the water recycling plant will serve other major industrial users in the area, which will further reduce demand on the Memphis Aquifer and protect the City’s current and future water needs.

Generating significant investment and creating high-paying local jobs.

Our facilities will create hundreds of permanent jobs in the greater Memphis community and across Tennessee. We also hire vendors and work with local businesses to support our operations, creating opportunities for many more Memphians.

Millions of dollars in taxes to Memphis and Shelby County.

We have provided tens of millions of dollars in local tax revenue since we arrived in Memphis in March 2024.

Based on current expansion plans, that number is likely to exceed $100 million by next year.

The tax revenue generated by xAI will support vital programs and services like public safety, health and human services, education, fire fighters, police, parks and much more.

Workforce Development

Throughout the process, our team has worked closely with local elected officials, Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW), and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). We are committed to being a responsible neighbor to the City of Memphis - creating newopportunities, revitalizing the city's industrial footprint, and helping position Memphis as the center of a new Digital Delta: a national hub for advanced manufacturing and high-performance infrastructure.

Community Engagement

xAI has already taken an active role in the community, working with local leaders and organizations to listen, identify and undertake important projects that better and strengthen the region.

Our team is helping improve the safety and appearance of area roadways, having already cleared miles of highways and streets. To date, we've removed over 300 discarded mattresses, 500 truck tires, and more than 15,000 pounds of debris.

In collaboration with local contractors from the Westwood community, we're planning improvements at John P. Freeman, Fairley High School, and Westwood High School - including upgrades to HVAC and PA systems, new cafeteria furniture, and enhancements to football and baseball fields.

Through the Musk Foundation, we have donated $350,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis to support its mission of empowering youth in Westwood and across Memphis.

We've partnered with Mt. Vernon Baptist Church to support its fundraising campaign to build a new community center for local residents.

xAI is granted a permit by Shelby County to operate 15 gas turbines at Electrolux. The 15 permitted turbines would make the Electrolux the lowest emitting facility of its type in the United States. Grok 4 is released, which is viewed as the world’s leading AI product.
