xAI’s facilities in Memphis are critical to our mission and success. Here’s why:
Memphis is home to Colossus, a state-of-the-art supercomputer that is also the computing power behind Grok – xAI’s revolutionary AI companion. By 2026, xAI plans to equip this facility with 1 million GPUs (special computer chips) to enhance the speed and intelligence of our AI systems.
xAI transformed a vacant 1-million-square-foot factory in Southwest Memphis into a cutting-edge technology hub. This massive space allows xAI to develop and test advanced AI systems, fostering innovation on an immense scale.
xAI’s presence in Memphis will create hundreds of permanent jobs in the Memphis community. Additionally we hire vendors and local businesses to support our operations. By partnering with other leading technology companies, xAI is helping make Memphis into the nation's leading hi-tech manufacturing hub, often referred to as the “Digital Delta.”
xAI is committed to being a responsible neighbor. xAI is constructing an $80 million water recycling plant to protect the Memphis Aquifer, a vital water source for the community. This plant, the Colossus Water Recycle Plant, is expected to save 4.745 billion gallons of water annually, reducing strain on the Memphis Aquifer by 9%. Additionally, xAI is working with local utilities to explore ways the company can help stabilize and potentially even provide energy to the local electric grid.
xAI will draw power from the local electric grid through two substations. At our Electrolux site we have on-site energy storage (over 240 batteries) and 15 permitted natural gas generators with best-in-class emissions control technologies that will serve as back-up power in emergencies, or when the local grid is strained during times of deep cold or heat. This will make sure the community gets the power they need, when they need it.

In addition to the permanent jobs we create, xAI is hiring thousands of subcontractors to assist with our work on various projects. Every local worker – 80% of which are hired directly from the Memphis community – is gaining valuable skills in emerging industries and supporting local businesses.
