At x.ai, we believe everyone deserves a helpful artificial intelligence assistant to give you back the hours spent in meeting scheduling ping-pong. We are building AI personal assistants (Amy and Andrew) that schedule meetings for you. This is a yet unsolved problem within AI, and a formidable technical challenge.
Our team of linguists, data scientists, AI trainers, interaction designers, and engineers has spent over 2 years building powerful, fundamental technology to allow us to solve the meeting scheduling problem. While we’ll always be working to make Amy and Andrew smarter, our next big challenge is scaling, to make them available to everyone in the world.
You will be helping data scientists and engineers who select you as their manager do the best work of their lives. Yes, you read that correctly: at x.ai, folks on the tech team can choose their manager every 6 months. As a newly-joined manager, you will have an initial group of reports until the next manager selection.
As a trusted advisor, you will be helping folks who report to you understand their strengths, personal values, and longer term career goals. You will be coaching people--and holding them accountable--for working toward their individual goals within the larger context of team and company goals.
As a member of the tech management practice, you’ll own the overall performance, diversity, and psychological safety on the tech team. You will be conducting experiments to help the entire tech team discover its best way of working. You will be evolving helpful processes and enabling constraints so that the team can build software at scale, quickly and with quality.
You will be growing the team, and in cases where x.ai isn't the best place for someone, you will be helping them transition to places that would be.
The role is based in NYC.
What you won’t be doing
You will not be responsible for tech direction, architecture, project or product management. You will work closely with people who own these areas.
You will not be coding. Doing this job well requires 100% of your effort and attention on the people and the processes.
We are a self-organizing/self-managing team, so you will not be using the traditional command/control management tools like performance reviews and pay-for-performance, or telling people what to do or how to do it.
You will not be determining folks’ salaries--though you will be making sure that team members are being paid fairly (based on market data).
In addition to having a background in technology, you are:
- a mature, intrinsically motivated person;
- highly collaborative, and driven by helping others succeed;
- experienced in mentoring and coaching;
- continuously learning about managing and leading humans;
- actively cultivating a wide-reaching network; and
- comfortable presenting to groups.
